Dual Band Rubber-Duck Antenna Testing (SWR)

I recently acquired a new wide-band SWR meter from Amazon, and I wanted to revisit the antenna tests I’d run in the past with my old 70’s 11m test equipment.

So, today I got together all of my the rubber-duck dual-band antennas, picked one of my ChiComm radios and took some measurements.

Here are the antennas I tested (left to right).

  • Nagoya NA-701
  • SaineSonic INF-641
  • Nagoya NA-771
  • Baofeng stock (long)
  • Baofeng stock (short)

Here are the results for my test. I ran each antenna 3 times in each band; at the lower phone boundary, upper phone boundary and close to the center of the band.

VHF Lo – 144.1 MHzUHF Low – 420.0 MHz
VHF Center – 146.0 MHzUHF Center – 435.0 MHz
VHF High – 148.0 MHzUHF High – 450 MHz

INF-6411.79:11.09:11.37:11.08:11.02:11.77:1
NA-7712.39:12.20:12.21:12.08:11.16:11.97:1

Stock (S)2.76:12.18:11.79:11.09:11.59:11.70:1

I was really surprised by how well (from an SWR standpoint) the little SaineSonic that came with my GT-3TP was. I was also shocked at how bad the two Nagoyas seemed to be. There was a 6th antenna (not stock, or Nagoya) that was in the 3:1+ range across all the bands. Either it was damaged, a fake.. or maybe they are simply garbage.

These tests are hardly scientific. I did, however, hold the radios in free space away from me, instead of testing them on the bench surrounded by metallic objects.. for those about to try and drop some truth bombs on me.

Once I figure out a fair rig to install the antennas into, I’ll hook up my little nanoVNA and see what it has to say. Could confirm these results, or it could say something completely different. What I’d like to see from the nanoVNA are some gain estimates. The little antennas might match well, but do they also have good gain; that is an important question.

Night Vision wildlife camera testing.

Well, with the move to a new mountain community, out of the city and the criminal element.. we now have something more interesting (and less dangerous) to watch. 🙂

I recently purchased an IR wildlife camera and have been testing out various locations around the yard for it.

One the first night testing, it captured this coyote visiting us around 9:00 PM.

The next time, at almost at the same time, another was captured. Could be the same one, but we know there are several in the area:

Earlier that same night, we heard what sounded like 5-10 coyotes attacking/eating something just up the hill from us. It was very loud, and the dog was quite distressed by it all, staying very agitated and on alert for hours afterwards.

The camera just happened to trip about 20 min. into the “event”, and it caught this audio. I had to punch it up a bit to hear much of anything, but it’s there.

Last night was a much calmer evening. We we woke up in the morning we noticed that some reflective posts were knocked over near the car (they were just leaning against the car port posts). The camera tripped around 2:00 AM, but nothing was seen in the still photos, and most of the video until the last 5 seconds, this little thing was captured. We know there are a number of rabbits, and it looks like maybe this was one hopping around on the driveway. Or a ghost!!! (lol). You can call it whatever you want.

I’m not sure I’m going to leave the camera there.. it doesn’t seem to work as well with just the blacktop in view. More testing is needed.

Life and Death – confronting the reality of our existence

That sounds pretty ominous, and in a lot of respects, it is.

Yesterday was a strange day indeed. While working from home during the building emergency water shut-off, we noticed Police presence next door, and not the typical type.

Here is the reason: the Coroner had arrived to remove the body of one of the people living in the unit next door. It’s a little weird to know that someone had just died next door, just a few feet away:
IMG_1594_death

They are both aged, and have in-home nursing care. I guess when that is the case the Police have to very carefully investigate the death. There were 3 detectives, county Coroner technician and a patrol officer all going over the scene.

When you see detectives leaving with bags of marked evidence, you wonder if something foul had occurred.

We later spoke with the complex maintenance man (for reasons related to the water shutoff), and he confirmed that they believed it to be a simple case of death by natural causes, but they have to impound medications, equipment etc. to make sure no crime was committed. He also confirmed that it was the first death in the building. Hm.. some consolation. :/

It was a very strange day, indeed. Godspeed to our neighbor. I hope they are now in a much better place, and able to get some deserved rest…. and no longer woken up in the middle of the night by the bar patrons across the street… :/

Memories of VME

vme.seattle.aug.2005.05
While enjoying a meeting up of the Nor Cal Ducati Club this evening in at Cibo, in Monterey CA., the subject of the Seattle VME (Vintage Motorcycle Enthusiasts) came up, specifically the wonderful and wacky “Isle of Vashon” event. The coolest aspect of the bikes you’ll see in these videos, is that they are ALL ridden to and around the island.

What others have posted about the TT

Sample videos shot by others:

Here are some articles about the event itself:

Now this is really cool, and geeky.. but a big post about VME on a Gamers forum!!

Vintage Motorcyle Rally (Pic intensive)

Where is this, “Vashon Island” place?

Vashon island is located in lower ventricle of Puget Sound:

Situated above Tacoma, south-west of Seattle and south-east of Bremerton, Vashon Island is one of the few Puget Sound island that is serviced only by ferry. No conventional roads exist to get to this island, unlike the rest within Puget Sound that are connected via some sort of bridge or another.

VME events, and the Isle of Vashon in particular, you can find not only a nice variety of vintage bikes, but a number of strange and often amusing customs.

I certainly wouldn’t mind attending another one of these unusual events some time in the near future!

Updated main website with Feed Dividers

Released enhancement today to display daily dividers in those RSS Feed aggregators that show data more than 1 day old. The most obivous of these are my Blog Updates and the USGS data feed.

This update works best in the USGS feed. The posting to my blogs is infrequent enough that the dividers are just as prevelant as the posts themselves.

Here is a screen shot showing this first implementation worked out. Loving it in the USGS Quakes parsers/agreegators but NOT loving it in my own Blog Roll.

New daily dividers
More changes coming, I’m fairly certain of that.

iPhone 4S almost here, FedEx tracking site not even NRT.

I received the shipping confirmation and tracking code yesterday. I’m quite excited about tracking my little phone package back and forth across the US:

The FedEx site seems to lag several hours behind the tracking updates. As of midnight, the status was still showing;

At 03:00 this morning, it’s showing that it arrived at BFI yesterday evening:

iPhone Package Tracking

I was hoping for a something a little more NRT (Near Real Time).

Those of you that have checked out my new website see that I’m all about displaying the latest data I can acquire.

Then there is the question of why I am awake at 03:00 PDT to even LOOK at this data. Insomnia is a regular part of my life.. something I’ve battled for years.. and some of it might be childish anticipation of playing with an awesome new toy, phone.

Even when it arrives some time Friday (today), I will have to go through several steps to get it activated. How many.. a lot.. (me thinks). This is direct from my ‘Welcome to the Borg’ e-mail sent from AT&T:

Congratulations! With AT&T, you get the nations’ fastest mobile broadband network* and the best coverage worldwide – more phones that work in more countries**.

To Activate your Device and utilize the entire suite of features included with your service, you MUST follow these steps IN ORDER;

1. Charge your iPhone.

2. Check all voicemail messages on your existing device. Once your new iPhone has been activated, all voicemail messages and greetings on the former device will be lost. (Existing AT&T Customers Only).

3. Turn it ON and follow the on-screen instructions. Your iPhone may prompt you to connect to iTunes via a Mac or PC. Install it for FREE!

4. Synch iPhone with your contacts, calendars and bookmarks on your computer and with music, video and other content from your iTunes library.

5. Activate your device online at some-website or by calling 1-555-555-1212 from another phone.

6. Turn ON your iPhone and make a test call. If your test call is not successful, wait one hour to allow the activation process to complete then try to make another call.

Once in hand, it’s going to be at least an hour of charging before I can even start to migrate the many gigabytes of information, contacts, photos, songs, videos and notes from the old white 3GS to my new white 4S.

I’m glad they released the white phone right out of the gate this time. I think they lost some initial iPhone 4 sales while people who like white phones (such as myself) waited out the initial order surge. Could this explain the massive initial orders that completely blew away the iPhone 4 release records? Probably not, but it was a factor for me. It removed the decision to wait for the white phone or order the new black one and live with it.

So.. here I sit, at 04:12, typing up a half-coherent ranty blog, wondering if I’ll get back to sleep or I’ll simply fire up the VPN and perform some of my day job.

California International Air Show 2011

It was a warm and sunny day along the California Coast for the last day of the California International Air Show, in Salinas CA. Only 45 minutes south of my friend’s hose in Santa Cruz, CA. it was easy to plug this event into the last day of my vacation.

After 2 weeks in the sun, I needed some shade. Another full day in the sun and I’d likely return home with a burn, so I lobbied to purchase the VIP Flight Deck tickets. It was an easy sell. The flight demonstration teams always work in a couple of extra tricks right in front of the VIP seating areas, and we’re at an air show after all. Accommodations where good. Food, snacks, soft drinks and a fully bar were all at our disposal, and the first round of drinks were included in the price.

The performances were great. Plenty of jet action in the air.

One of the highlights of the show was the TORA TORA TORA performance. It’s a 10 minute show using aircraft from the original 1970 movie TORA TORA TORA. It’s a sight to see, so I’ve uploaded video shot with my little Canon camera set on the fence (it get’s bumped a few times so the framing missed the final WALL of FIRE, which I found unfortunate).

When the SnowCones took to the air, we decided to move onto the static displays. I’ve seen the very polite and nearly silent (and I’m sure very environmentally conscious) SnowCones enough times to fall asleep during their show. I had a 900 mile drive ahead of me that night, and I needed to remain alert. Oddly the couple of times I looked up into the sky, they always seemed to be speedily (albiet quietly) flying away… hm… I wonder if they are all French Canadians…).

So off to more interesting things likes Cessnas and Piper Cubs.

Netflix tries to make nice with customers

As some of you might have read in my Tech Feeds today, Netflix has backed off form the Quickster project.

Here an e-mail I just received from them. Nice Mea Culpa. “Uh.. er.. sorry.. we’re sorry.. prices still going to be same but no new DVD only website.”

Dear David,

It is clear that for many of our members two websites would make things more difficult, so we are going to keep Netflix as one place to go for streaming and DVDs.

This means no change: one website, one account, one password…in other words, no Qwikster.

While the July price change was necessary, we are now done with price changes.

We’re constantly improving our streaming selection. We’ve recently added hundreds of movies from Paramount, Sony, Universal, Fox, Warner Bros., Lionsgate, MGM and Miramax. Plus, in the last couple of weeks alone, we’ve added over 3,500 TV episodes from ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS, USA, E!, Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, ABC Family, Discovery Channel, TLC, SyFy, A&E, History, and PBS.

We value you as a member, and we are committed to making Netflix the best place to get your movies & TV shows.

Respectfully,

The Netflix Team

Passing of a friend. Memories of Allie Daneman

Today I have a very, VERY heavy heart. Yesterday I learned of the passing of a friend. Allie Daneman (aka Drainfade) left us yesterday at the age of 38. I miss him already.

I first met Allie 10 years ago, via the Pacific Northwest VFR list.

Having both grown up the S.F. Bay Area, we immediately hit it off. Allie was always a joy to ride with, we met up for rides often. He had and energy and passion for motorcycles that was infectious.

It was with great sorrow, we’d learned of his cancer diagnosis, just a short couple of years later. It was a grave prognosis. Melanoma. Skin cancer. And it was in an advanced stage. But he forged forward with the therapy. He told me about the horrendous descriptions of what the Chemotherapy would and could do to his body. But he had a great passion for life and his family, and he persevered.

He bravely fought the battle for 8 years. Far surpassing expectations of survival. He was, a fighter!

Recently he’d asked me a question about Short Course R/C truck (he has and SC10, similar to mine). Sadly, I didn’t find the answer to his question before he passed. Not that it matters any more, but I hate not having had the chance to be a friend to him, just one more time, and send some help his way.

Sadly, I didn’t know how badly things had recently being going for Allie. For those strong enough to read it, his blog tells the frank and sobering story of a man preparing for the end. It was difficult to read, but I felt important to do so.

I’m having a hard time getting my thoughts together today. I’m been in shock since I found out around 5:00PM yesterday. We had some great times, and when I started this entry… my intent was to focus on those good time, sharing a few stories… but.. I just can’t do it right now. Instead I’m including the obituary from his own website.

Allie George Daneman age 38 passed away on April 5, 2011, after a courageous 8-year-plus battle with melanoma. He is survived by his wife Jennifer of almost 13 years, their three children Ben (10), twins Toby and Jessi (8), brother (Jake), parents , Stepmother, Grandmother, Uncles, in-laws, brother-in-law, Stepfather. A native Californian, Allie was born on November 28, 1972 and grew up in San Francisco. He graduated from The Athenian High School, a Bay Area private college prep. school, in 1991. Allie holds a BS Degree in Business and Public Administration from U. of the Pacific, Stockton, CA. At UOP, he belonged to the Omega Phi Alpha Fraternity and played on the Lacrosse team. Allie worked as a Network Engineer for Alcatel-Lucent, T-Mobile USA Integrations Lab in Bellevue, WA. He loved to snow ski and snowboard. Allie was an avid motorcyclist and maintained a blog of his motorcycling exploits, culminating in his annual ride from Seattle, WA to the Laguna Seca MotoGp races in Monterey, CA. Motorcycling was more than a hobby for Allie–it was his passion. His family and friends will miss him immensely as his undying spirit freewheels in eternity. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Daneman Family Fund at US Bank. Memorial Service will be held on Friday, April 8, 2011

The silver lining in this, is that he’s at peace now. No longer in pain, and free to ride the skies at will.

Godspeed Allie. We’ll all miss you my friend. We’ll miss you a lot.
