Truely aggressive contries dealing with Mexican Flu

A little news that highlights was a REALLY aggressive national government does to protect it’s people. Extreme? I don’t really think so. If there is a massive outbreak then it needs to be CUT OFF, BORDERS CLOSED.

The CDC and the White House could learn a little something from this. Oh.. wait.. nope.. because “Liberals are ALWAYS right. Ask them”. – Marcus Luttrell, American Hero.   So, read on Reuters article:

Chinese, Mexicans return home as flu fears ease

By Royston Chan and Alistair Bell

SHANGHAI/MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – Mexico was flying home dozens of its citizens on Tuesday quarantined in China over fears of a new flu virus and announced plans to revive its economy hit by the deadly epidemic, which showed signs of easing.

An Aeromexico plane arrived in Beijing to pick up Mexican nationals there, after taking on dozens in Shanghai. The flight was scheduled to head south to Guangzhou and then to neighboring Hong Kong before flying home.

None of the 70 or so Mexicans quarantined in mainland China have shown symptoms of the H1N1 [Mexican] flu, but they have been caught up in a drama about how far governments should go to stifle fears the virus could creep across their borders.

Can Chrysler survive another merger?

Follows is an article written by good friend Marc Besso, regarding the proposed merger of Chrysler and Fiat.

Can Chrysler survive another merger?

There was talk that Chrysler couldn’t survive the merger, but it turned out to be completely wrong.  It was American Motors that didn’t survive.  That was in the late ’80s and you’d be hard pressed to find many in the auto industry (outside a few collectors & enthusiasts) that remember much about American Motors these days.

I remember them well.  They were the ones that brought Renault back to the United States.  What’s that you say?  You don’t recall Renault ever returning?  It was as a few, rarely-lamented models that sold under the AMC name for awhile; then as Eagles after the merge. (Alliance, Encore, Premier)  All badges whose mere names promised something the backing corporation couldn’t uphold.

It turns out Chrysler only wanted American Motors because they held the rights to the Jeep name.  Once Chrysler had control of that tasty morsel, the rest no longer interested them.  They did get Francois Castaing–a wily Renault engineer that worked his way up from the race team to head of Product Development…..or some such fancy title.  His replacement was even better.  One Bob Lutz; a man who truly was incredible in almost every role in his career.

Fast forward another decade and it appeared that another merger might create the world’s broadest model line-up and [possibly] the next largest thing in the automotive world.  Chrysler was going to merge with Daimler Benz.  Hallelujah!  Where do I sign up?  It must’ve been a matter of weeks before the running joke was “How do you pronounce Daimler Chrysler? Simple, ‘Chrysler’ is silent!”  Some believed it would bring the level of quality in Chrysler’s product up to the standard of the German companies.  Others, like myself, knew the effect most likely would be a downturn in the quality of Mercedes’ products.  Chrysler scored the equivalent of winning Lotto by getting a number of Mercedes-based chassis to build some very successful models on. (300 C, Charger, Challenger, Crossfire, Sprinter)  Mercedes got…..mostly, screwed.  They had a little fire sale of their own and pedaled Chrysler off to Cerberus a couple of years ago.  Bob Lutz had long since moved onto GM: Think rat & sinking ship. (He bailed on GM just a few months ago for much the same reason)  Bob’s no dummy!

Now the Fiat empire is offering (threatening?) to merge with Chrysler and become the global automotive giant it has always wanted to be.  They’ll instantly have the conduit to sell their Italian products in the American market again. (Fiat cut and ran from the US about the same time Chrysler first went broke and asked the US Government for a loan)  Enthusiasts got momentarily excited because Fiat is the parent company for Ferrari, Maserati, Alfa Romeo and Lancia.  That moment faded fast when they realized Ferrari & Maserati were already sold in this country….and the other companies didn’t really offer much they cared to own anyway. (Save for Alfa, who only want to sell the 8C Competizione @ $250K/ea — we want the Brera @ $25K)  There are already jokers saying things like: “If Fiat were meant to rule the [automotive] world it would be called Toyota.”

So, can Chrysler survive another merger?  Some could argue that’s the only thing they’ve ever done right.  Time will tell, but I don’t see this latest merger offering any long-term benefit to Fiat.  If there’s a benefit to be reaped from this merger it’ll fall to Chrysler.

It’s late and I need to get some sleep.  See me in another few years to find out how this latest merger works out for Chrysler.

747 flying off-course in NYC caused building evac

What the FAA indicates was a photo-op fly-by, coordinated with state and federal authorities, a Boeing 747 escorted by two F-16 interceptors, was flown down over the Hudson river (same approach pattern used by the killers on 9/11).  The sight caused a couple of buildings near the World Trade Center crater, to be evacuated.

Image from http://nyulocal.com

Since it was coordinated, it seems it would have been nice of them to tell the people in the buildings not to panic!   Geez.  Nothing like needlessly scaring the crap out of people.

Some photos have been taken of this event by paniced citizens, I’ll post links as soon as I can find them (they are doing multiple passes of the jets so I’m sure plenty of photos will be posted soon).

Congrats US NAVY – Rescue of Captain Phillips.

Congratulation to the US NAVY for the sucessful rescue of the hostage, Captain Phillips.  With 3 of the 4 pirates killed and the 4th in custody, it seems that it was a very successful operation.  News still seems to be streaming in and accounts vary slightly by source.

MSNBC – ‘Captain was in imminent danger’

MOMBASA, Kenya – U.S. Navy snipers opened fire and killed three pirates holding an American captain at gunpoint, delivering the skipper unharmed and ending a five-day high-seas hostage drama on Easter Sunday.

Reuters –  ‘U.S. NAVY rescues captain, kills Somali pirates.

MOGADISHU (Reuters) – The U.S. Navy shot dead three Somali pirates and rescued cargo ship captain Richard Phillips on Sunday from a lifeboat off the coast of Somalia where he was being held captive, ending a five-day standoff.

[…]

“The on-scene commander took it as the captain was in imminent danger and then made that decision (to kill the pirates) and he had the authorities to make that decision and he had seconds to make that decision.”

President Barack Obama granted the Pentagon’s request for standing authority to use appropriate force to save the life of the captain, Gortney said.

Washington Post — ‘U.S. Captain Rescued From Pirates by U.S. NAVY SEALs

Washington Post Foreign Service
Sunday, April 12, 2009; 6:39 PM

Mombasa, Kenya, April 12 — An American captain being held by Somali pirates was freed unharmed Sunday in an operation carried out by U.S. Navy SEALs, U.S. military officials said. Three of the pirates were killed and the fourth was captured.

The captain, Richard Phillips, who had been held in a lifeboat adrift in the Indian Ocean since Wednesday, was initially taken aboard the Norfolk, Va.-based guided missile destroyer USS Bainbridge. He was later flown to the USS Boxer, where he received medical attention and phoned his family. The operation took place at 7:19 p.m. local time, the Navy said.

Bottom line is that our new President exhibited some stones, ordered the rescue and let the NAVY do what it needed to do, to make that happen.   Credit is due to all in this situation, including the President.  Why it took 10 days to put the operation together, or for the order to be made, I have to wonder.  But, it’s still great news!

The first US flagged ship comendered in 200 years and it was quickly returend to crew control, the the pirated/terrorists where dispatched.  No money paid.  This is message to the rest of the panzy nations worldwide that help to make piracy a viable business model.   GET WITH THE PROGRAM!   KILL THEM, DON’T PAY THEM!

Fear and Sausage

I’m not always a ranting old Conservative, sometimes I kick-back and indulge in the more bizzare and sometimes twisted art that comes out of Hollywood.  Tonight…   it was…   Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.   What in incredibly insane film that is.   Gilliam shot that film just the way you’d have to do it, with odd angles, distortion lenses and in settings to bizzare you could only find them in Tijuana or Las Vegas.

It is not only a strange story of an insane multi-day drug binge by the two characters ‘Raul Duke’ and ‘Dr. Gonzo’, but it’s also choc full of cameo appearances!   Cameron Diaz, Christina Ricci, Mark Harmon, Lyle Lovett, Flea, and  (I did not notice this until I watched the additonal features)   Hunter S. Thompson himself!   The encounter was so obvious I completely discounted it.

The outrageous amount of destruction, and rampant weirdness (I still have no clue how he ended up wearing the lizard tail), is bracketed by moments of near sobriety where Duke attempts to decode the activities of the nights before.

No, not a complete fan Hunter S. Thompson’s politics, I do respect his need to live, and die, on his own terms.  But he was not only a more intelligent version of Timothy Leary, he also wrote some pretty amazing stories (including the book that inspired this movie).

One of my favorite examples of his work, is the story ‘Song of the Sausage Creature‘.  It’s a fantastic story, about an afternoon where Thompson is asked to write a review of the new Ducati 900ss motorcycle.  The description of what it’s like to light one of those things off and take to the wind is…   a little twisted but so aptly descriptive:

But when we ride very fast motorcycles, we ride with immaculate sanity. We might abuse a substance here and there, but only when it’s right. The final measure of any rider’s skill is the inverse ratio of his preferred Traveling Speed to the number of bad scars on his body. It is that simple: If you ride fast and crash, you are a bad rider. And if you are a bad rider, you should not ride motorcycles.

The emergence of the superbike has heightened this equation drastically. Motorcycle technology has made such a great leap forward. Take the Ducati. You want optimum cruising speed on this bugger? Try 90mph in fifth at 5500 rpm – and just then, you see a bull moose in the middle of the road. WHACKO. Meet the Sausage Creature.

Hunter S. Thompson –   Song of the Sausage Creature

So, if you find yourself bored of the straight-down-the-middle milk-toast crap typically excreated by Hollywod, check out the movie.  Or, if you want a little light reading, the story is rather amusing. 🙂

FreeCreditReport.com — NOT! (catchy FTC PSAs included)

Working with web scams on an hourly basis, I never paid much attention to those annoying ‘FreeCreditReport.com’ commercials.  They are annoying at best, bait-and-switch at worst.    What I’m happy to see is the Federal Government activly educating people about such ‘services’.

What I found this morning (thanks LinkedIn contacts) was this blog on the ITAC about two new FTC ads regarding services such as the one mentioned above.    You can go there for the source, but since these videos are public, and the FTC is trying to educate people, I’m embedding them here.

Enjoy!
